What are Natural Pregnancy tests?

Getting pregnant is an important turning point in a woman’s life. If you have missed your period and you feel you have some early signs of pregnancy, the best way to check your pregnancy is visiting a hospital and undergoing a urine pregnancy test. Just in case, if you do not have access to go to a hospital or don’t have a pregnancy test kit to confirm, you can try some natural pregnancy tests. Some women who undergo fertility treatments may have to do a pregnancy test often and they may rely on these natural pregnancy tests.

Natural Pregnancy Tests are those that can be performed with simple ingredients like sugar, shampoo, bleaching powder, vinegar and toothpaste that are readily available at home. The idea behind all these tests is that these substances react with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the hormone produced during pregnancy.

The scientific evidence of these tests is lacking and its accuracy remains a question. It becomes mandatory that you cross check your results through a valid laboratory test.

How to perform the test?

The ideal time to perform the test is a day or two after your missed period date. You can also do when you have early signs of pregnancy like morning sickness, nausea, vomiting, tender and sore breasts, frequent urination, fatigue and bloating.

Most natural pregnancy tests require your urine sample. Make sure you collect your urine sample early in the morning because it is concentrated and can provide an accurate result.  The bowls and cups you use for the tests should be free from germs. Do not shake and disturb the sample when you wait for the reaction to happen.

Some of the natural pregnancy tests are listed below:

1. Bleach Pregnancy test

Collect your urine sample in a clean container and add some bleaching powder and mix thoroughly so that there are no lumps. If you notice that the mixture forms a foam or fizz, it means that you are pregnant. This test can sometimes cause harmful fumes and caution is required.

2. Sugar Pregnancy Test

It is said that when there were no scientific kits available in the market, people relied on this sugar pregnancy test. Add one teaspoon of sugar in a bowl and one teaspoon of urine to it. If you notice that the sugar forms clumps it means that you are pregnant and if the sugar dissolves quickly, you are not pregnant. It is believed that hCG in the urine of pregnant women does not allow the sugar to dissolve completely.

3. Toothpaste pregnancy test

Use white toothpaste for this test. Use two teaspoon of white toothpaste in a container and add a urine sample to it. If the color of the toothpaste is changed (blue) and it becomes frothy, it means you are pregnant. When the ingredients in the toothpaste react with hCG, there may be a change in colour. Coloured toothpastes should not be used for this test.

4. Vinegar Pregnancy Test

Take two teaspoon of urine, add vinegar and mix thoroughly. If the colour of the vinegar is changed and it forms bubbles, you are pregnant. If there are no observable changes, you are not pregnant.

5. Soap Pregnancy test

Take a small piece of any bathing soap and pour urine on it. If it forms bubbles you are pregnant. In the same way, shampoo can also be used. On adding shampoo, if the urine and shampoo mixture froths and foams, it means a positive result.

6. Baking soda

Collect a urine sample in a container and add 2 teaspoon of baking soda. If the mixture forms bubbles, it indicates a positive result.

7. Pine Sol

This is a household cleaner. Mix half cup pine sol with half cup urine. Wait for three minutes, if you observe a color change, the test is positive.

8. Dettol Pregnancy test

Take one teaspoon of Dettol and add it to a bowl that has 3 teaspoon of urine. Wait for 5 to 7 minutes. If the urine separates from Dettol and forms a separate layer on the top, it indicates a positive pregnancy.

9. Salt Pregnancy test

This is the cheapest and reliable home pregnancy test. Add a pinch of salt to the urine sample. If you notice clumps, it indicates a positive sign.

10. Wheat and Barley Pregnancy Test

Take some wheat and barley seeds in a bowl, add a urine sample and wait for a couple of days. If the seeds germinate in a couple of days, it means you are pregnant.

·         The home pregnancy tests are never 100% accurate.

·         Sometimes there can be false positive results as the change and reaction can due to urine pH than the presence of hCG in urine.

·         The chemical reaction may vary depending on the quality and quantity of the ingredients.

It is ideal to use a scientifically validated pregnancy test to avoid false positive results. Detecting pregnancy appropriately and accurately allow you to get the required prenatal care.
